Kunjapuri Temple Trek: A Sacred Sunrise Journey Above Rishikesh
The Kunjapuri Temple Trek is one of the most accessible and rewarding short treks in Uttarakhand. Rising to an altitude of 1,645 meters, the temple sits atop a ridge offering stunning panoramic views of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks on one side and the Ganges River valley on the other. Ideal for spiritual seekers, photographers, and beginner trekkers, this trek combines nature, serenity, and cultural significance in a compact half-day experience.
A Trek Made for Sunrise
The highlight of the Kunjapuri Temple Trek is witnessing the sunrise over the Himalayas. The golden morning light illuminates peaks like Chaukhamba, Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Gangotri, making it a photographer’s dream. As the valley below remains wrapped in mist, the higher ridges glow under the first light—a moment that feels both divine and cinematic.
To catch the sunrise, most trekkers start early—between 4:00 to 5:00 AM—from Rishikesh or Tapovan. The early effort is well worth the spectacle at the summit.

Spiritual Significance
Kunjapuri Devi Temple is one of the 52 Shakti Peethas in India, believed to be the place where the chest of Goddess Sati fell. It’s a revered shrine for locals and pilgrims, especially during Navratri and Dussehra. The temple is also associated with Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have sanctified it during his travels.
With a peaceful aura and simple architecture, the temple offers a tranquil setting for meditation, prayer, or just reflection against the vast Himalayan backdrop.
Scenic Rewards
From the summit, trekkers are treated to a 360° view of the Garhwal Himalayas and the plains of Rishikesh and Haridwar. On clear days, the snow-capped ranges seem almost within reach. The trail itself offers glimpses of forest life, rustic mountain villages, and sometimes even rare Himalayan birds.
