Androgenic Alopecia, also known as pattern hair loss, is the most common type of hair loss in both men and women. It is a genetically inherited condition caused primarily by hormonal changes, particularly the increased sensitivity of hair follicles to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). While not life-threatening, androgenic alopecia can significantly affect one’s self-confidence and emotional well-being.


What is Androgenic Alopecia?

Androgenic alopecia is a progressive condition in which hair follicles shrink over time, producing thinner and shorter hairs until they eventually stop growing. It typically begins after puberty and progresses with age.

  • In men, it usually starts with a receding hairline and thinning at the crown (top of the head).

  • In women, it typically presents as diffuse thinning over the top of the scalp while maintaining the hairline.


Causes of Androgenic Alopecia

  1. Genetics:
    This is a hereditary condition. If you have a family history of baldness (from either parent), you’re more likely to develop it.

  2. Hormones:
    The primary hormone involved is DHT, a by-product of testosterone. In individuals genetically sensitive to DHT, the hormone causes hair follicles to shrink, shorten their growth cycle, and eventually stop producing hair.

  3. Age:
    As people age, the rate of hair growth slows down naturally, which can worsen pattern baldness.

  4. Other Triggers (can accelerate it):

    • Stress

    • Poor nutrition

    • Smoking

  • Pull test or Trichoscopy (using a magnifying tool to examine hair shafts and follicles)

  • Scalp biopsy (in rare or unclear cases)

  • Blood tests (to rule out other conditions like thyroid issues, iron deficiency, etc.)


Treatment Options

Although there is no complete cure for androgenic alopecia, several treatment options can slow or partially reverse hair loss:

1. Medications

  • Minoxidil (Rogaine):
    An FDA-approved topical treatment that can help stimulate hair growth and slow the process. Available for both men and women.

  • Finasteride (Propecia):
    An oral prescription medication for men that reduces DHT levels, slowing hair loss and sometimes promoting regrowth. Not recommended for women.

2. Hair Transplant Surgery

  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) techniques can permanently restore hair by moving follicles from dense areas to balding areas.

3. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

  • Laser caps or combs that stimulate follicles, potentially increasing growth in some users.

4. PRP Therapy (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

  • A non-surgical treatment where your own blood is used to stimulate dormant hair follicles.

5. Lifestyle and Dietary Changes

  • Protein-rich diet, biotin supplements, zinc and iron can support hair health.

  • Reducing stress and avoiding harsh hair treatments can help prevent worsening.


Can It Be Prevented?

If you’re genetically predisposed, complete prevention may not be possible, but early diagnosis and intervention can significantly slow the process and preserve hair. Regular check-ups with a dermatologist and starting treatment at the first signs of thinning are highly recommended.
